âWho will kill Matty, Ariel?â Violet asked. âLittle Blossoms?â
She could feel fear building inside her and battled to keep it at bay. She remembered what Anthony had told her about how the other babyâs family had been found dead. Had Ariel been attacked and her attempted murder staged as an accident because she knew about Matty? Was she targeted because sheâd talked to Violet?
The roar of a snowmobile filled the air, and she could hear Lorenzo shouting. Justin stood. So did Violet.
âAriel!â Lorenzo shouted. âJosh! Viv! Where are you?â
âDown here!â Josh called.
A yellow emergency rope ladder tumbled over the side of the cliff. Seconds later, they saw Lorenzo climbing down it so quickly his feet barely touched the rungs. âIs she okay? Is she breathing? Is she conscious?â
He leaped off the ladder and ran toward them. Violet met him a few feet away from Ariel.
âSheâs in and out of consciousness,â Violet said. âBut she seems stable for now.â
Lorenzoâs eyes rose to the sky.
âThank you!â he expelled the words in a single breath so forcefully that Violet wondered if he was praying. Lorenzo dropped to the ground beside Ariel.
A faint sound rumbled in the distance. Violet pulled Justin aside.
âThat might be the helicopter,â Violet whispered. âCover for me. I want to try and contact Anthony. I know thereâs no signal, but I have to try.â
Justin nodded. Then without missing a beat, he strode over to join Lorenzo and asked him where the closest search and rescue dispatch was based.
Violet silently thanked God for partnering her with someone who was so unflappable and reliable in an emergency.
Then she walked a few steps away and pulled her phone out of her pocket. The signal had half a bar. She prayed and then typed.
Ariel was attacked. Didnât see it. Seemed disoriented. Fell over cliff. Search and rescue incoming. Keep her secure. Investigate Little Blossoms.
The icon spun, telling her the phone was trying to send the message. All it needed was to catch a signal for just a fraction of a second and it would go through. The message failed. She tried again.
A second person started down the rope ladder. She looked up. It was Scott. A chorus of worried voices filled the cliffside above her. Faces peered over. As much as it pained her inner cop to know they might be trampling over evidence, she also knew there was no way to secure the scene without blowing her cover.
The roar of the helicopter grew closer. Scott joined Lorenzo by Arielâs side and started checking her vitals. Scott was a Canadian ranger, and Violet knew his first aid training would be second to none. Within moments a yellow search and rescue helicopter hovered above them, shaking the trees and sending ice crystals falling. Two Canadian armed service paramedics in bright orange jumpsuits dropped down from above. Justin ran to the nearest one and briefed him quickly on how theyâd seen her fall over the cliff and their attempt to keep her alive until rescue got there.
